Hello everyone

In our single-family house (built in 1969), I would like to insulate the basement ceiling in the oil tank room. In the living-dining area above with a tiled floor, your feet get cold very quickly in winter. The tank room is closed off with an access window from the heating room. As far as I can tell, the basement ceiling is made of reinforced concrete. If possible, I want to stick the insulation material to the ceiling.

- Which materials are suitable, and how thick should the insulation be?
- Is a vapor barrier needed? Could there be problems with moisture?
- What else should I watch out for?

Thanks in advance for the feedback

Hello kingblatter,

For the thermal insulation of the ceiling of an oil room, I would choose non-combustible insulating materials; glass/mineral/stone wool would be the usual choice. The insulation thickness depends on the available room height (also consider the height of the window lintel); I would make the insulation as thick as possible, which would be around 14cm.

You do not need a vapor barrier, there will be no moisture problems; what else to pay attention to can be well read in the two links.

I glued SWICO glass wool boards (Stutz-Isolation) to the concrete ceiling using construction foam. The boards are covered with a white fleece. Advantage: no fibers can come loose later, looks good, brightens the room, is fireproof, no problems with moisture.
Apply the construction foam on the back of the boards in lines spaced 15-20 cm apart evenly and immediately stick the boards to the concrete ceiling.
Tip: Until the boards are firmly glued, the construction foam should be allowed to dry for about 2 hours.
For this, place a solid wooden board slightly larger than the glass wool board underneath and wedge it between the floor and the glass wool board. After about 2 hours, proceed with the next board, and so on; this way you get a clean and smooth surface.

Hello everyone,

so gluing with construction foam is not such a good solution. Alone the time required: gluing each individual panel, protecting against falling, waiting 2 hours, gluing the next panel, the panels have the format 50 x 150 cm... how long does it take until a tank room ceiling is insulated?

My advice is to always follow the manufacturer's installation instructions; gluing with construction foam is not part of that.
Quote from the homepage of Stutz Isolationen AG:
Installation options for the construction of SWISO ceiling insulation:
1. Special plastic insulation pins, which are hammered into concrete or hollow core ceilings, hold and secure the insulation panels.
2. For special requirements, concealed mounting can be done with special metal brackets.
3. With aluminum profiles and ceiling hangers, a suspended insulating ceiling can be installed (especially for the insulation of storage and factory halls).
4. In special cases, installation with adhesive or adhesive/dowel combination is possible.

But "adhesive" does not mean construction foam.

Hello

Ideally, a multi-layer insulation board which is non-combustible and fiber-free. Can only be glued with the appropriate adhesive.
