I quite liked the idea from in post #7. Of course, it only helps to a limited extent.

No; why? The architect had a plan for our house back then. So; in what proportion ceiling insulation to attic insulation is.

We actually store everything there except paint and tools. Those are in the basement.

But clothes/books/toys/suitcases all in the attic. Cushions...

In our old apartment it was the same principle. And there we also had no problem with moisture

We handle it the same way, only that we don’t have a basement and therefore really everything that doesn’t belong in the garage is up there. And that’s why my wish was also because of cushions and such, also because of colors, that it’s less extreme temperature-wise up there, so frost-free in winter and less hot in summer. Well, 8,500 was probably quite steep, but postponed is not canceled. Damage to the stored items has been manageable so far, a bucket of wall paint. Karsten

We'll probably do it ourselves after all, but keep an eye on the development.

: Is there anything against doing it yourself? I’m also doing it together with my 59-year-old father. That should be about your age. It’s pretty simple work. Only with the drywall sheets and the vapor barrier would a second and maybe third person be helpful. For your orientation, since we basically have the same size to insulate: We have 162 sqm of sloped ceiling

Costs: Knauf insulation wool WLG 035 €6.21/sqm = €1,006

Formwork €0.54/sqm = €270

Drywall 1250x2000 €1.79/sqm = €290

Vapor barrier €0.49/sqm = €98 (we would need 200 sqm)

Stapler, nails, tape, and adhesive (I can’t recall the technical term right now) cost around another €150.

That’s material costs just under €1,850. So you can figure out what your offer was worth.

Thank you for the prices. That just confirms my doubts back then and my inquiry whether 8500 was okay. No, simply overpriced, especially since the quite large carpentry business probably buys better than you. So they wanted 7 for the work... ambitious. That would be over 100 hours. - Of course, you can do it yourself if you handle the vapor barrier properly. That’s also my thought now... the summer is long, and the material is manageable. And in the family, there is a young carpenter who always needs a little extra euro. Karsten

Better prices for the craftsman? Hmm, kind of, I would say it depends.

It was like this for us: conversation with the carpenter about whether the material would be cheaper through him. He inquires, I inquire again a week later. In the end, I was 1.89 / sqm cheaper on the insulation because I hinted that I was comparing (by the way, that was decisive. I have an acquaintance in the office there who overheard the salesperson say "Oh, he builds with company X and they always buy from dealer Y, so I have to give a good price"). The carpenter was then mad that I got significantly better prices. He asked another company, which then also matched my price.

What did I learn? Either the carpenter wanted to earn well on the material and didn’t just add the usual 4% for his effort, or many companies are lazy and don’t compare but always buy from their regular dealer and thus don’t get the optimum (the disadvantage of the higher price is paid by the customer anyway or you don’t get the order because you are too expensive). I suspect a combination of both...

Anyway, it’s crazy to see what possibilities sellers have with prices
