Dear florists,

I would like to relocate the sink in my kitchen from one wall to the opposite side. For this, hoses for the supply and drainage would need to be laid along the wall or under the floor, which I actually feel capable of doing myself. However, I have heard from several people that such work should be done or approved by a professional, because otherwise, in the event of water damage caused by a burst pipe or similar, neither liability, household contents, nor building insurance might pay out. Is that correct?

And are there general rules about what sanitary work one can do oneself without risking insurance coverage? For example, what about connecting the washing machine?

Thank you!

Of course, you may connect your washing machine yourself, you may also plug the hairdryer into the socket yourself or close the fridge door on your own ;-)

There are naturally things that are better not done by yourself. But that mostly has to do with the quality or difficulty of the work (high voltage, water pipes in the wall, proper window installation, etc.).

An artist of life creates such a connection effortlessly. But seriously, a look at your policy holds wonders. If you have a cheap policy = it will be difficult. If you have a powerful policy with, for example, negligence not excluded = it will be more likely.

But connections like electricity, water I personally leave to the professional.

Sink? Hoses? As for wastewater; except for the washing machine and dishwasher; it usually flows along a steady slope in a rigid PVC pipe. If you actually want to lay hoses, better leave it to a professional.

Depends on your insurance. If the waiver of gross negligence is not included in the policy on the insurer's part, the insurance can even turn it against you if you have left it running unattended.
