Permissible Limits The least stringent limit for devices installed outdoors applies to industrial areas, where 70 dB(A) is considered acceptable. At the other end of the scale are areas where hospitals and similar facilities are located, where the immission limits are 45 dB(A) during the day and 35 dB(A) at night. In purely residential areas, a limit of 50 dB(A) applies during the day and 35 dB(A) at night. However, there is another catch: the values mentioned are limits for immissions – that is, for the total load from all sound sources. This is hardly controllable for the individual operator of a heat pump. The only way out is to have the heat pump classified as an “irrelevant sound source” in order to be released from this overall responsibility. For this, the respective permissible limit must be undercut by 6 dB(A). Have the installer give you the value of 35 dB(A) at your neighbor’s window in writing, then it should be fine for the time being. Otherwise, you will be compromisable!
