Infrared heating or preferably night storage heater?

Hello community,

I am reaching out to the experts because I am totally confused. About 1.5 years ago, we bought a used house from the 50s with an old oil heating system and last year we had a consumption of 6,000 liters of oil (for 180 m²). Since that is obviously way too much, I spoke with our local utility company and they told me that the best option would be a storage heater or infrared heating, because with that 1. we wouldn't need an additional gas connection, 2. we would gain space by removing the oil heating system and tanks, 3. the purchase wouldn't be expensive, and 4. we could heat with cheap and ecological electricity using modern control technology during green electricity surplus.
Now I did some research and found out that there is hardly any green electricity at night, because the sun isn't shining, so storage heaters are probably ruled out. Infrared heating is somewhat more expensive to purchase but according to Redwell's homepage it is much cheaper than e.g. natural gas (because it heats the walls/ceilings, not the air). Now my neighbor said that electric heating systems are prohibited. Therefore, my questions:

1) Could the 6,000 liters of oil consumption be correct or do we have a leak in one of the tanks (it does not smell like oil)?
2) Is it still allowed to install electric heating systems?
3) How can I get cheap green electricity with control technology?
4) What is more economical: storage heater or infrared heating?

Regards
Tobi

How old is the oil heating system? And even more interesting: What have you done to the house so far? Have windows been replaced or the roof/walls insulated? If not, that could be the case.

Before installing a new heating system, I would first consider insulation measures. Because if the heat escapes through the roof and walls, it almost doesn't matter what you heat with, it will definitely be expensive. Unless you have your own forest and enjoy chopping wood. :-)

Right, first the consumption must be optimized, only then can one think about the type of heat generation. However, I already fear that the heating based on electricity is uneconomical. If you don’t change anything in the building, you will become poor with 6000 liters of oil consumption when switching to electricity. A leak should be visible. Didn’t you have that checked? You should do that very quickly, otherwise it will get expensive. Regards Rudolf

The heating has probably not been renewed since construction (so likely also from the 50s). We replaced the plaster inside and outside. Otherwise, nothing. Unfortunately, we don't have a forest either. But we are probably thinking about replacing the window glass, because in January when it was very cold outside, we had frost flowers on the inside, and I have been told that this is probably no longer normal today.

That is really not normal. But then the consumption makes sense.

Look for an energy consultant. My district, for example, offers free energy consulting. For starters. And then you can look for specialized companies. The important thing is: if you get something done, do it properly. In our multi-family house, the walls were insulated gradually, but after the third one they stopped. The windows were not considered, now there are thermal bridges and moisture problems. So the insulation measures have to be coordinated.

So: roof or attic, windows, basement ceiling, walls. But you need professional advice for that. And a sufficient budget.
