I just bought a 1.40 by 2.00m slatted frame today because I didn’t read the description of Mandal properly. Hopefully, I can simply use the slatted frame for the bed and just lay it in.
I had the same story: bought the slatted frame separately in advance! Meanwhile, I can no longer buy the Mandal bed in 140cm width at all. In Vienna, they say it’s uncertain when it will be delivered again, and you can’t order it online either. Since there are no other nice and suitable beds at Ikea, at least not to my taste, I will buy a Mandal second-hand.
Regarding the slatted frame: You can find a picture here showing what it looks like (because Ikea doesn’t bother to put anything other than these small and unclear pictures on the web, which we all know).
This shows how the slatted frame from Mandal looks. I assume that the mattress simply doesn’t slip because it has a large contact area, and the friction forces are large enough to prevent sliding. Also, the wood of the slatted frame is rough and not varnished.
I plan to screw the separately bought slatted frame onto it. Let’s see how it will look. I suspect you will see the frame of the new slatted frame on the side. Since mine is only about 3cm high, it probably won’t bother much.
