How thick should the walk-in shower glass be?

I need to equip three showers (walk-in) with approximately 1.20 m length and about 0.9 - 0.95 m width with shower glass. Most profiles I have seen are chrome or black. There are not so many white ones. At [school] I saw a white profile, but the glass there is only 6mm thick.

1. Is 6mm still okay, since most shower glasses I have seen are between 8 and 10mm?

2. Instead of the long profiles, there are sometimes two wall brackets. Would such brackets be recommended? Could one possibly also use two stabilization bars instead of profile/bracket and design the glass as "freestanding"?

I don't feel comfortable with 6mm. I have always used 8mm so far.

I find those things totally ugly. They are never as tight as the long profiles either. But they hold just as well. However, how you would seal freestanding glass (i.e. only with brackets) remains a mystery to me. And the stability naturally suffers as well – anyone leaning far down on the glass can, in the worst case, simply push the shower wall inward (the glass is only placed on the floor, there is usually no rail or anything like that). You can also use profiles that are flush-mounted into the wall. Then you get the same effect but guaranteed good hold and a tight wall finish.

thank you very much for the detailed answer. I will then also take at least 8mm. (Although Schulte is not really a no-name brand and probably offers an entry-level quality with 6mm).

Regarding flush-mounted: When I enter this in Google, the shower glasses with two fittings (top and bottom) appear. There is something from Geberit where the rail can be recessed into the wall.
