How sensitive are painted stair steps?

After 17 years, I have 0 scratches on the beech steps. However, [natur farben] and not painted white.

After 17 years on the Kenngott stairs in the townhouse, we already had a few scratches, none were serious. Children grew up, dogs used the stairs - it was all OK. By the way, with white, you can repaint the treads after a few years. It's not a big deal.
