And what does that mean exactly? Up to which week of pregnancy would one have time? Not that one is just slightly past it later.

The class that was predominantly in place during the assessment period counts, so 7 of the 12 months

/EDIT (sent too early): However, all deferment provisions must be taken into account, such as maternity benefits, parental allowance period for other children, etc.

I have to deal with this right now because of our second child, since some of these deferment provisions apply (what a word).

What also needs to be considered:
We had planned it that way too. But then came a "doctor-prescribed work ban" (I don’t remember the technical term right now) and the problem with that is that these months are not counted towards the 12 months, so our planned 8 out of 12 months became 5 out of 12 in the end and the old tax class then applied after all. Since I also went on parental leave and had no work ban, the 8 out of 12 months with the worse tax class applied for me. In the end, both parental allowance benefits were calculated with the worse tax class.

That is bitter.

But can the deferral conditions not be waived upon application in case of a corresponding disadvantage?

That was not the case for us. My wife was put on a work ban immediately after the pregnancy became known. And nevertheless, the months were counted towards the calculation of the tax class. But this was also in 2012/2013. Since many little things change annually regarding parental allowance, this may of course have changed.
