Hello,

does anyone have an idea how much money we can save if we do the following services ourselves:

-install windows / front door / and interior doors
-lay tiles
-drywall + painting work
-install sanitary facilities

and does anyone know how much, for example,
-only the shell construction approx. 130sqm + basement + garage
-plastering (exterior plaster)
-electrics
-heating (underfloor heating)
-ventilation system
-roofer
-incidental construction costs
-that is, approximately the rest costs?

Would be grateful for some info.

Best regards Caro

Hello,

so we are also currently gathering information. And exactly the points you list, we also always wanted to remove. You just must not forget that the material costs have to be added again.
We currently have an offer:
Interior doors = 2250€ (is it worth it?? We need 7 doors and the ones we like cost 150€ + 50€ frame so that would be about 1400€ + 2 sliding doors about 300€ = 1700€ a saving of 550€ well, it’s okay.)
Tiling work = 5950€
Drywall = 5000€ (only attic slopes, the rest is bricked for us)
Painting work = not included
Installing sanitary = not worth it because you have to buy the sanitary items yourself and the builder gets them cheaper, so that cancels out.
We currently want to build a house of about 135m² and later add a carport, but without a basement which costs about 30000-45000€ more.
Our house currently costs 145800€ with everything included (it is an anniversary offer). If you only want the shell, I don’t know exactly what that costs, you just must not forget that you have all the stress and have to take care of everything. If I were you, I would consider taking a shell house. Upstairs you can always do everything yourself.
Additional construction costs are about 30000-35000€

Best regards

I would be cautious with windows.
The quality of the window (i.e. thermal insulation, tightness, etc.) depends heavily on the installation; there is a lot you can do right and also a lot you can do wrong.

Which sealing tapes, profiles, which foam (storm water tight outside, diffusion-open?) you should use can be told by a professional (and by that I don’t mean a salesperson at a hardware store who has never installed a window themselves).
What about window sill connections, sun protection, etc.?
There are some details to pay attention to.

Since I don’t know which installation method is desired, I cannot tell you an exact amount you would save by self-installation.

In the end, it probably won’t make much of a difference. Because every window dealer will most likely avoid touching the parts themselves and will leave you with the full risk (transport damage, glass breakage, damage during installation, warranty, guarantee, etc.).
If something needs to be replaced in the next few years due to poor installation or installation materials, you will have to pay for it out of your own pocket, and then the savings will be gone (and you will have done a lot of work for it ...)

But I don’t want to tempt fate. I’ve had some handy customers who installed their windows themselves. It is possible.

Front door: Absolute no-go, I would say.
The thing costs a lot of money and is very heavy.
If a company is already installing the windows, the installation of the front door won't cost the earth ...
By the way, I would do that quite late.
The front door easily gets scratched if workers are coming in and out all day.

Interior doors: Okay, you can do that yourself (except for fire doors).
What a professional company would charge for it, maybe 40-80 euros per door, if it’s nothing complicated.
The installation materials would of course be included.

Don’t know how well equipped you are with tools? You always need tools and small parts; the installer carries that with them.

Conclusion: Personally, the workload would be too great for me to do it all myself and constantly go to the hardware store to organize tools and small parts.
If windows + front door + interior doors already cost 20 thousand euros, I’d rather invest something in the labor.
Because then the work is done quickly and properly (the installers do nothing else all day long) and in case of doubt I have a contact person to turn to.

Hello,

my husband is a trained metalworker (doors, windows, railing construction), although it's been 6 years since he last did the job, he can still manage it. We want to ask at his old company how it looks if he helps out,... They parted on friendly terms.

If the complete offer + warranty doesn't amount to €5,000, then we might have it done as well.

But you're right, I always say, don't overestimate yourself.

Best regards, Caro

Own work is basically only worthwhile in areas where labor costs are significantly higher than material costs.
