Hello

Since I do not own an entire house but only an apartment, the contents insurance is mainly still an open issue.

What are points that absolutely should be covered in a contents insurance?
What I would like to insure, for example

Water damage
Mold
Fire (whereas the fire insurance for the house already covers the structure, but only partially the furnishings)

Well, after that I really don't know what to do anymore.

Points that come to mind: - Overvoltage damage (not just lightning) - if expensive bicycles are present, then check how they are secured - items on the property (e.g. garden furniture/grills) With insurance, there are usually different plans (basic protection, medium, complete) Often there is a simple overview/list showing what is included in which plans. There you can check yourself what you haven’t thought of so far. If you can’t find anything, at Interrisk under home contents on the bottom right under Downloads there is "Household Concepts L, XL and XXL at a Glance"

And very important. Include waiver of underinsurance. Otherwise, one looks pretty strange when a claim has to be settled.

You pay through the nose in the premium for that, because waiver of underinsurance generally means an insured amount of €650/sqm. With 180 sqm living space, this results in an insured sum of €117,000 for the interior. You have to have that first. And consider which damage events you actually want to cover – when would the entire household contents really become unusable? Maybe in a fire; a burglary costs €5-10k.
In my opinion, the waiver of underinsurance is a gimmick to drive up the premium. Ultimately, as you already said, you pay this high premium to have a more stress-free settlement in case of emergency.

I would also make sure that there is no overlap in coverage with the building insurance. In more expensive building insurance policies, burglary damages to doors and windows, for example, often seem to be covered. In that case, it might be worthwhile to just take the basic tariff, since such damages are usually also covered in the household contents insurance.

Lack of waiver of underinsurance is often used to reduce the settlement. It’s not really about that so much.

Assuming you only have €50k insured for 180 sqm; then in the event of a claim, payment is not made up to €50k, but proportionally to the then determined household contents. So, €50k damage; the expert determines your household contents are €75k. And then the insurance only pays €37k.

Really expensive are smoldering fires with smoke that contaminates all the things.

Often, pipe bursts outside the wall and you’re not there for 2 weeks...

And then not only the household contents have to be replaced, but hotel etc...

By the way, I just checked. 180 sqm with €117k including natural hazards €240 p.a.

The same, insured with €60k is €130.

Everyone has to decide for themselves.

What makes no sense to me:

1. Mold (if there is mold on household goods, it has been damp for a long time)
2. Surge protection (is better solved technically)
3. Frozen food
