I'll tell you as a physicist: it doesn't work.
Buy a proper descaling system.
(The salt you put in there does not end up in the water, it only regenerates the ion exchanger. Just like in any normal dishwasher. Nothing else).

The topic first came up for me in 1988. I also investigated it with one of my professors. There is no function. No lime ions lattices are rearranged or any other such claims. That’s simply nonsense. Because it would essentially be a perpetual motion machine. The little kinetic energy of the water (water has a strong dipole) in the vicinity of the magnet generates virtually zero energy. Far too little to be able to affect anything. Simply nothing happens.

Best regards
Thorsten

PS: Bach flower remedies at least work. Attempts to descale water with magnets or to persuade the water not to deposit lime in household plumbing: does not work.

That is not entirely correct. In a typical drinking water softener based on ion exchange that is regenerated with salt, the Ca and Mg ions in the drinking water are exchanged for Na ions. At least the Na from the NaCl does indeed end up in the drinking water!

Therefore, with very high hardness levels, you cannot go too low because the 200 mg/l sodium limit in drinking water must not be exceeded.

OK.

But better than a totally scaled system, broken faucets, and machines.

I am very glad: here in Velbert we get our water from Kettwig. There is a small but very fine waterworks there. For about 100 years now, Velbert has been receiving water from there via two pipelines as the only other municipality in the Bergisches Land. The exception: Velbert Langenberg, which gets its water from another supplier, with a substantial amount of lime...

The water is almost lime-free. It has excellent quality and taste (which is why I switched to a water sparkling machine and drink tap water with carbonic acid).

I could completely do without a water softener here. After almost 2 years in the house, I haven’t even had to clean the screens in the faucets. Before, one town over (with a different water supply), I had to do that every two weeks. Two weeks ago I cleaned the showerheads, but there was hardly any lime, in fact almost none.

Best regards,
Thorsten

I grew up in a region with hard water.. about 18°. Three years ago I moved, and here the tap water is nicely soft, 7°. I don't want to miss that anymore, and since our new building has a different water supply again with 19°, I got myself a Grünbeck VGX 9. But it is still packaged at the construction site, so I cannot share any experience.

I will ask my sister in Bavaria tomorrow. I believe they also have a Grünbeck system in the house. If I’m not mistaken. The name sounds familiar.

I was surprised back then: Because there is extremely (!) hard water there, but nowhere were there any lime deposits. Everything was spotless. Water tasted good. Coffee/tea very tasty. I didn’t know that kind of thing, but I also lived in the region for 30 years.

That’s how we got talking about the system and I then took a look at it in the basement. I was amazed at how simple these systems have become. Actually completely trivial.

As I said, I was focused on that kind of system because: I was *TOTALLY* annoyed before, also here with us. Kettle, boil water twice for tea, 1 mm lime scale inside. Expensive coffee machines completely break down after 2 years despite descaling, flow heaters last 3 years and cost 1000,- to replace, faucet strainers I had in packs of 20 in the cupboard and so on. Water lime terror. If you call the supplier and complain about the quality, they treat you like you’re stupid. How angry I was.

But when I found out that Velbert gets its water from Kettwig: That was it for me. Lime scale is not an issue here at all. I’m glad about that.

Best regards Thorsten
