The invoice from andimann is good, but it does not take some things into account:

- the different price increases of electricity & gas over the next 20 years
- the premiums and discounts from KfW and BAFA for a geothermal heat pump

In addition, gas is mostly offered in combination with solar thermal energy. You can save yourself the solar thermal system with geothermal energy. Then the cost comparison is completely different again.

Normally, gas heating only works with solar thermal energy because the Energy Saving Ordinance requires a certain percentage of renewable energies. However, under certain circumstances, it is also possible without solar thermal energy, see the thread "Gasheizung ohne Solarthermie?"

Whether gas without solar thermal energy is still a possible option with the new Energy Saving Ordinance valid from April 2016, I do not know.

Of course, the bill cannot be reduced to just the pure "fuel costs." And how they will develop in the future is also very difficult to predict. However, in recent years, electricity costs have risen significantly more than gas costs. And personally, I suspect that this will remain the case.
But if you include all the investment costs along with interest costs, maintenance costs, depreciation (after 20 years the heating system is done), etc., in my opinion the gas heating system is unbeatable economically. Especially without solar thermal! But nowadays you can hardly get that approved anymore, next year it will be very, very tricky...

I once put together an Excel spreadsheet in which all these values are included. You can play around with it and no matter how you turn and twist it, you won't get it cheaper than a gas heating system.
or other admins:
I am happy to provide the table if desired.
Next year you will probably (but that depends on so many factors that you really have to calculate it) have to install solar thermal not only for domestic hot water heating (about 5sqm) but also to support heating (about 10-12 sqm). Economically complete nonsense, but that's how the eco lobby wants it...
That then quickly costs 3-5k euros more and shifts the calculation in the direction of heat pumps. And heat pumps are also becoming cheaper...

But even in the best light, it is very much a matter of taste and belief. One person might not want gas in the house, someone else might dislike heat pumps, etc...

Best regards,
Andreas

Looking at the annually newly installed amount of wind power and solar, the electricity mix will look different in 20 years. Gas will always have to come from fracking, Russia, and elsewhere. In this respect, it will be even harder for gas in the future. Wind power is already nearly competitive without subsidies today.

Hello Andreas,

feel free to upload your table; I’m curious too. I think that gas will have a very hard time due to the upcoming Energy Saving Ordinance; solar for domestic hot water on the roof will not be enough.

Rhenish greetings from the road

Hi everyone, I unfortunately can't upload an Excel file, it only accepts images and PDFs... So what now? Best regards, Andreas
