Hello,

we moved into our end-terrace house in February and have only had the essentials done by the landscaper so far (paths, terrace, lawn). Unfortunately, there was little time for garden planning during the construction period, and we would now like to tackle it.

Here first is the exterior plan with a few comments

We are still a bit clueless about the following points and would appreciate some suggestions and support:

1) Since we have neighbors on all sides, we would like some privacy screening. We don’t like mesh fences or hedges, but rather flowering hedges or similar. Do you have any tips on arrangement or another idea?
The most important privacy screening is in front of the 3m floor-to-ceiling glazing on the long side of the house, as well as in the garden area and next to the terrace. We made the planting strip wider and extended it to the terrace to be able to plant more there. Especially in the other areas, it does not necessarily have to be a completely opaque screen; it doesn’t bother us if you can still see a bit of the neighbors.

2) We will probably rotate the arrangement of the garden shed and tree (see arrows). Otherwise, we would like to design the garden so that it looks modern and not too meagre despite the small size. Do you have any ideas about this?

3) We can still design the front garden completely but have no idea yet. We would like raised beds as well as a path around the house. Raised beds e.g. behind the lawn paving stones. Maybe something nice in front of the heat pump to cover it.

To help you imagine it better, here are a few pictures

If you have any questions, just write.

Hi - what kind of terrace slabs are those and how did you have them laid? In a gravel bed or concrete?

Thanks

Phew, well, that’s not much garden. I also once had such a DEER-garden, overall 10.50 meters wide, of which 3.50 at the narrow edge.
At the back, terrace side then 7 meters or so (I don’t remember exactly).
There wasn’t much space to plant.
I see the problem on your narrow side where you want privacy screening but also want to be able to walk through. For a flowering hedge you have to reckon with 2 meters depth/width. Then there’s not much space to walk through without getting wet from the moisture on the bushes themselves, because they grow close to the house. You also have to consider that you would have to plant them with enough distance from the neighbor.
I would wait by the edge and see what the neighbors have planted there. You could benefit from their planting if it creates privacy screening for you.

Modern is already the clean lawn area. Small plots are usually laid out so that the diagonals work for you by being longer than the plot depth itself. So go diagonally if you want to create a bit more “space” through sight lines; raised beds can certainly be placed right on the boundary in the front garden.

South is at the bottom of the plan, right?

Oh, that's quite a lot of garden for a mid-terrace house. We have 90 sqm with just 4.60m width and are currently redesigning. On the narrow side, where you still want to walk through, I would forgo a flowering hedge. There, a pergola at the maximum allowed height for direct boundary contact and then greening it. I can only make planting suggestions if it is to be native and insect-friendly. And how tall plants are allowed directly on the boundary. In our neighborhood, no one cares because boundary distances are not practical. But I don't know your neighborhood.

Does the neighbors' planting help much, since they are one meter lower?

I would also go in that direction. Otherwise, you would look at a dark, green wall even from the large window.
