Forums are meant to shed light on the darkness. No question, Matter will eventually represent a worthy solution. Only rather in the consumer sector. In other words, the devices are supposed to sell, and as often as possible.

In terms of home electrical systems, however, I would opt for the path of sustainability. Installed once and functional for decades.

The main problem with all retrofit systems is that the devices still require power.

Another issue is everything that has IP in its name; it is in the nature of the matter that these systems become obsolete faster than one would like and require constant maintenance and care. Matter will be no exception here.

You're right about the electricity, that's a bit of an issue.

With flush-mounted variants, it's not a problem since there is power anyway. Only with, for example, window contacts, batteries are used.

We also don't have such high demands; for example, I don't necessarily need presence detectors everywhere.

Just small automations for shading, rolling shutters up and down, and if a window is open, no rolling shutter down, or in the bedroom when the window is open, the ventilation slots in the rolling shutter open, or switching light switches, or when the TV is on, turn Ambilight on. There are certainly many other small automations that I can't think of right now.

But we don't need complete automation where we don't have to press anything anymore; we just want a small relief and a bit of comfort.

What would your sustainable variant look like? What should we suggest to our electrician? Hoping he can implement it cost-effectively (without developer markup).

In your case, I might maybe look towards OPUS, generally Eltako, and yes, Matter remains of course an option, the only question is when.

I had already looked at Opus and EnOcean. I thought Matter would be more future-proof since all the big players are involved (my assessment)

What would you have recommended as a basic installation? The one that can then be expanded later, which you mentioned at the beginning
What should we discuss with the electrician?

That all the big players in the IT industry are involved in Matter doesn't say much at first. Certainly, it is a good idea to unite everyone and tidy things up.

But IT people have tried this several times. However, they always overlook one core problem. Home electrical systems have only limited connection to IT, or the overlaps are only marginal.

Also, the person who installs all this and later maintains it is usually not an IT specialist but an electrician, and both typically have quite different training.

Therefore, the big players in the IT industry are actually the small ones in the automation industry.

Basic installation would be:

- Lights
- Power outlets
- Blinds
- Window/door contacts
- HVAC (initially minimally integrated)
- LAN/WLAN

Structured cabling and not conventional.

What do you mean by structured cabling? What is the difference compared to conventional?
