We are currently planning the outdoor areas. This also involves the topic of "fences."

Our west side of the property is 49 meters long. For simplicity, I wanted to plant wild roses. Unfortunately, my husband has no sympathy for that at all. Half a year of nagging hasn't helped.

He would prefer a self-made picket fence. But I don't feel like going into the forest to cut down little trees. For 10 or 20 meters maybe, but not for 50 meters.

We both don't want shrubs and bushes.

Recently, I watched a film about orchards where they planted medium-height fruit trees in rows. And I immediately liked that idea for us. Actually, my husband did too :-)

Now my question: has anyone perhaps used espalier trees or columnar trees as a fence and could share their experiences with me?

I have never seen this for cost and time reasons and cannot imagine that anyone does it. Also, the maintenance of espalier is very time-consuming compared to "normal" planting or a lifeless fence. What purpose is the enclosure supposed to serve? And always remember that the trees also have trunks at the bottom ;-)

Why not a bit of everything in terms of length?

I also find espalier very labor-intensive. In addition, they are not opaque and may require scaffolding. However, I don't see the problem:

If HE wants, then HE should cut his own wood. You can calmly choose your roses to plant in front of it.

Purpose of the enclosure: I don't want deer and wild boars in the garden. No privacy screen is needed since there is a field on that side anyway. So I don't really find such a neat espalier nice either... it should look a bit more "wild." Maybe just fruit trees with low trunks, roses in between, and picket fences. And a few old granite columns...

I'm a bit lost right now. What do you mean by that?
