I would never in my wildest dreams finance an architect's self-realization. Even if I had the money left over, I build what I like.

Yes, but the architect builds according to the given specifications. Not based on a layperson's hand sketch. A good architect applies design and architecture and develops a suitable residential building for a plot.
The layperson simply cannot grasp this due to lack of knowledge.
I would let myself be positively surprised.

I can understand the architect. I do think that as a client, one should express their wishes, and the architect will usually adhere to them as far as it makes sense.

From what I've seen in my circle of acquaintances regarding self-designed floor plans, I wouldn't want to put my name on them as an architect either. Hallways are often larger than living rooms, rooms facing north. Water and sewage running through the house, stairs that are not walkable, etc...

The architect has about 10 years of training for a reason. It's good if the architect clearly expresses their concerns during the preliminary discussion. No architect can economically present or demand the time to design a draft together with the client (and thus 10 planning rounds over months).

Regardless of the actual issue, the personal level does not seem to fit here. I consider this, whether with an architect or a general contractor, to be very important for success in house construction. Therefore, I would continue searching.

There are hardly any prospective home builders who have not already looked online in advance for floor plans and designs and thus already have a certain idea of the little house. The architect then develops a preliminary concept based on these ideas. This is discussed and changes/requests are taken into account. This should generally be handled this way...

A (almost any) single forum is already enough to find, for example, downright labyrinths that are desperately forced into a square frame. Unwalkable staircases are also not hard to find. On the internet, wildly composed hodgepodges are sometimes pieced together that dog breeders would call mutts: Tuscan Bauhaus with floor-to-ceiling corner windows, a brick-clad dining bay, and a shed-hipped roof carport. In such cases, it is undoubtedly a blessing not to end up with an aesthetically unscrupulous general contractor plan submitter. But it doesn’t seem to me that this is an extreme case here :)

Here it sounds more like either an architect of the artist-diva type who wants to be recognized by his sculptural style, or someone who sees the builders as financiers of his reference gallery. In my opinion, such a person should build his model home with his own money.
