You each drive 400km per week. So almost one tank, which amounts to 150€ per car per month. You have that money. Also, the installment is only 400€ above your cold rent. The additional maintenance will likewise not be significant.

Hello, you are moving away to improve your living situation. At the same time, you are worsening your finances (fuel costs / cars) as well as the quality of life (2 hours away per person??).

I wouldn’t do it. Especially since you also have a desire to have children, right? Then you’d rather be close by quickly.

The situation with the commute is of course a big issue, especially with kids it becomes a daily ordeal in kindergarten age every morning. Even if you only work part-time, the fuel costs and the effort are always the same. I generally also find the repayment a bit weak, I would add another 100 or 200€ on top. But it has to suit you.

Is there a possibility in the medium term to change the employer and be closer? At least for the wife (childcare in case of illness, etc)? There are professions that are somewhat less specialized or less passionate, where you can find something else nearby.

Basically a very solid foundation for a new build. The sticking points are less financial and more personal in nature. - Do you really want to put yourself through this hassle? - Are children planned? If so, I assume soon. Are there daycare / schools / infrastructure in the new place of residence?

Thank you very much for the many responses. I will try to clarify a few open points.

Yes, the 45km also intimidate us a bit, but you have to say that after 5km you are on the highway and then you can practically drive straight to the workplace. You can be at the location (without traffic jam) within 30 minutes.

Changing workplaces is actually not an option for either of us.

The desire to have children is not conclusively settled, but this is not due to our decision-making ability, rather other "health-related" reasons.

The question is of course - what do we want with 5 rooms, 140 sqm without children.

Likewise, alternative thoughts come up for us, simply renting a house closer to the workplace, about 15-20km away. Here the prices in the area are between 900-1100€ for similar properties, if they are not new buildings. This actually seems to be an option for us (even though we do not own the property), to live a financially freer life and not to "lose" equity.

What is your opinion on this?
