FibreTwist and Unifi Router - what about telephony?!

Hello everyone,

we are getting an FTTH fiber optic connection from the regional provider. They install a FibreTwist unit with an integrated modem in the HAR. For me, actually optimal, because I want to connect directly to my Unifi DreamRouter anyway.

Now I have read that the modem sends telephony and internet over the same LAN port with different VLANs. But the DreamRouter (at least in my configuration) cannot handle telephony or VLANs on the uplink. Now I'm kind of stuck – how can I make calls with the landline number now? Do I have to first put a FritzBox in bridge mode in between so that I can use the telephony through it?

I haven’t read enough yet, but if I have the SIP access data, I could replace the FritzBox with a telephone system on the Raspi (e.g., 3CX), right? But for that, I would first need to "get the VLAN to the Raspi," wouldn’t I? (Sorry, lots of half-knowledge here, I know – but I’m eager to learn).

Can someone enlighten me or shout out keywords with which I can smartly google?

I just came across the Gigaset Go-Box 100. It seems to be a telephone system and DECT base in one, exactly what I need (assuming I just have to enter the SIP data there and that's it).

However, it is only compatible with special handsets, which I don't really want to get. But I guess there is no other way to make it work (?).

Alternatively, I could do without DECT and instead rely on WLAN telephony. But then I still need a central telephone system for the SIP data, and the "handsets" (clients?) would then register there in the system, right?

Says who? As far as I know, the handsets just need to support DECT. Some comfort functions might possibly not work with non-Gigaset handsets.

Is that a Genexis box you are getting? It has a total of 4 LAN ports. Then you could connect your DreamMachine to one port and use the login data to establish the connection for the internet connection. You use a second port for the FRITZ!Box or another PBX that is SIP-capable and use it for the SIP dial-in.

Yes, exactly such a Genexis. I somehow understood it like telephony and internet only come together from one port and I then have to split it via VLAN. But that is probably due to my lack of knowledge, because otherwise having a total of 4 ports wouldn’t make any sense. So, thanks for that!

Now the only question left for me is whether to connect a FritzBox for telephony or such a Gigaset box or something else. The latter only makes sense if it can do DECT since I would connect pure IP phones via Wi-Fi and enter the SIP data directly there, right?

With the Gigaset box, it may be that only the comfort functions work with the special MX handsets. Makes sense. But since I would like to have a central phone book, pure DECT wouldn't work anyway, right? So directly IP phones?

I have a similar setup and would now actually like to have a landline phone. In the rented apartment, you could always hear your mobile phone vibrating somewhere. In the house, it could have been lost in so many places….

I get fiber optic with an ONT and behind it is a Ubiquity UDM Pro.

I thought it would be simple to just connect a wifi VoIP phone and then be able to make calls. But after a quick Google search, I realized I have absolutely no clue about telephone technology and also only found pretty expensive models.

Adding a Fritzbox just for DECT seems dumb too, right?

Are there any simple and cheap options without additional base stations?
