Hello,

does anyone have experience with geothermal baskets or perhaps has even installed and operated some themselves?

Thank you in advance

Hello Nordmann,

are there any experiences by now?

Right, it's about the baskets (spiral collectors) as in the link from King Song or for example also from the company IWS in Celle. There are quite a few providers.

Hi,

I would be rather cautious. If I understand correctly, it is similar to the coils, which are laid out extensively in the ground at about 2-3 meters depth, there are (as far as I have informed myself as a layperson) not really any long-term experiences. If something doesn’t work, you have to dig up a large area.

Excavator work is expensive and laborious, besides the fact that you need the area and possibly destroy your garden/ outdoor facilities.

I also looked into the ice storage solution, which doesn’t seem too complicated, but then I gave up.

In the end, I would rely on proven solutions that are easy to maintain. Either gas or an air heat pump or even a ground source heat pump. Both combined with photovoltaic and in a few years with a power storage system. We will have a ground source heat pump. Of course, there is also a certain risk that you have to drill again.

My acquaintance has had 5 baskets in the garden for 8 years and is satisfied. However, he had no space for a surface installation of the collector.

I chose the surface collector because, firstly, I have the space (700m² collector) on a 1600m² plot, and secondly, 4 heating engineers said it is not as effective as the surface because it would have to be completely filled with sand, and sand does not store energy as well as normal soil. It regenerates more slowly and was significantly more expensive than the surface collector. I think something like twice as much.

Then the 4 heating engineers are probably a bit poorly informed....the baskets are usually filled with soil and compacted.
