I definitely know very capable and reliable craftsmen from Eastern or Southeastern Europe. Therefore, I would have no fundamental concerns. If there is a personal connection, then that is a sufficient quality seal.

That was not meant as criticism. The difference for me is, at the hardware store I buy the materials. When I hire a craftsman, I used to think I "buy" the service. I assumed that the craftsman gets his earnings from the service. He gets the materials at purchase price and thus cheaper, I thought. But it’s not an important issue for me, it just interested me.

Yes, he receives it cheaper than a private individual. If you even get it at all. But he can never pass on his purchase price. Then he would incur losses. He also has costs arising from the trade. And he may also take a profit. If you buy the goods elsewhere and he only charges for the service, then he will take a higher hourly rate.

That is absolutely common and is part of cost and performance accounting, which is probably also taught in vocational school for craftsmen. A standard method would be, for example, at least to add the overhead costs to the purchase price of the materials. Usually, though, they also want to make a bit of profit, yes. The difference could be that a hardware store makes a 10-40% margin on the materials (probably very different depending on the product category), while a craftsman makes possibly 30-50%. Depending on how they calculate internally.

The craftsman MUST offer you a warranty on both installation AND material. After installation, these can no longer be separated! Because if the washbasin was of poor quality, he is still involved. Then you can order a new one from Megabad, but he has to install it again.

Also quite popular among craftsmen: flat rate for installation, material provided by the client. But then a pipe clamp, a special bracket, a siphon sealing ring, or some other small detail is missing. Now the craftsman is supposed to come out again just because of YOUR clumsiness?! Who pays and how? That is why craftsmen order from their wholesaler, to whom he sends you for sample selection—he can guarantee warranty thanks to cashback due to higher prices. And the likelihood that something is unintentionally missing in the delivery is practically non-existent because it is assembled by professionals.
