Lottery winners do not have such an income tax assessment.

I suppose I can understand Merlin's question, it was also on the tip of my tongue. On the one hand, the OP does not talk about the best year, on the other hand, he has to pay additional tax. That does not really add up. Unless he had previously had the advance payments reduced.

especially ridiculous ~20000 EUR back payment. I will also pay that this year and my income is only half as high...

What I rather wonder: Why so much money in taxes? His average burden should be just under 41.x %. There are several legal ways to reduce that (e.g. Sparschwein GmbH).

You almost feel like you're at the tax advisor. Somehow this whole thing reminds me of the movie "Italian Job," when one guy didn't know what to do with the money and stole the other guys' ideas.
