I think they don't have to be exactly aligned. In children's rooms, they are also not directly above the dds in the living area.

Is a floor grate 40cm away from the windows common, or do you usually place them closer to the windows so they are less noticeable?

That depends on your type of screed. If it is too close to the window, it could break off. But basically, you can do it however you want.

How close are yours to the window? I measured: ours start at a distance of 25cm from the window. I saw a picture on the internet. There it is 7cm distance between the window and the floor grid. Hence the question. I just don’t want it to be placed unnecessarily conspicuous here. I don’t know what is usual...
