We were incredibly lucky here. I am so grateful that our city was spared. The neighboring district was affected somewhat, but not seriously. 50 km further and the situation would look different. Water is so incredible and merciless. When we built in 2006, I specifically looked for an insurance that also covers natural hazard damages. It was not so easy back then. Not every insurance had that. Let's see how my premium changes now that I suddenly live in a potential risk area.

What about the suppliers? I briefly read that gas and electricity lines no longer transport?

In Ahrweiler, a gas pipeline is broken over a very long distance. The supplier assumes that it will take weeks to repair. People will have to do without hot water for a very long time and, in the worst case, when the heating season begins, they will not be able to heat.

I have even seen exposed sewer pipes in pictures. Months go by. Unimaginable. All bridges must be renewed and rated with the new HQ100. That takes years with the German bureaucratic red tape.

The question is actually whether entire districts will be rebuilt in the same location at all. These massive damages are the worst in western Germany since World War II. In some regions, there is nothing left. All infrastructures are simply gone.

I really appreciate the mentality of the Americans who live on the coast in Florida. They always rebuild their houses.
