We have 80m² of basalt gravel (8-16mm - 5cm height) with gravel cells (120x100) as driveway and carport base. Because of the cells, the ground is so compact that you can easily ride bicycles on it.

Without wanting to go into the "arguments" any further... we would do it again. None of it is really a problem or bothersome. You just have to carry the inline skates to the street...

If you want to keep it absolutely free of plants, the structure you have in mind is good. We made it much easier for ourselves. Basically, only frost protection (sharp-edged gravel) was compacted on the ground (done by our garden landscaper) and that's it. It’s not gravel (round stones), but many call it that. Both points of criticism are justified. Stones get caught in the tire treads and shoes again and again – and that will also happen with round stones. It doesn’t bother us. If we still had children running in and out, it would be a different matter.

That’s right, here it is often called a "Saxon path surface." There is plenty of information on the internet about it, including its difficult maintenance and upkeep. We had such a path surface in front of our house and also in the garden. First of all, our expert didn’t really know much about it, because it is created with a specific structure. In addition, it was virtually impermeable when it rained and the water could not drain, which we urgently had to change. So we scraped out about 7 cm of the fine material again with a shovel, which was partly not so easy anymore, and replaced it with the same base material but in a different thickness (I would have to look up which one it was or you can look here in the forum for my description yourself). A short time ago I also posted a few pictures here. We have two electric cars and really like this new driveway, also because we didn’t want to pave and it looks nice in that light brown shade. The truck dumped it and we spread it about 7 cm thick with the wheelbarrow and then compacted it with the vibrating plate. We find its use trouble-free and would definitely do it again; besides, it cost only a few hundred euros for a huge area. One can see ruts and occasionally a few stones on the road, but we don’t carry any of that into the house since these are larger stones that also don’t stick to shoe soles. The water drains very well and even the now rarely occurring weeds can be easily pulled out; the previous path surface always got unsightly mossy.

Light brown limestone chippings 8/16, that's what it's called.

Thank you all for sharing your experience, also for sharing the pictures and specifications! I will then go into deeper research and, if we decide on a [sächsische Wegedecke], look for a specialist company. I also learned a lot, the forum is really great. Have a nice weekend everyone!

I like that very much. We have more or less what you have at the carport.
