Hello everyone,

although our construction doesn't start until May, we are already considering today whether and how we can make our garden cat-safe. I would be very happy about suggestions, opinions, and cost estimates.

Best regards

Hi,

The safest way is to have your own tomcat who marks his territory and keeps other cats off the property. I can say this from personal experience. Before we had our tomcat, our property was a public cat toilet.

A short time after he moved in with us and had free roam, the problem somehow solved itself.

However, if you don't want a pet.......

Regards

I also have a few house cats who already get scared when they're on the balcony and a car drives by. So I don't worry at all about mine when they get to roam freely, they don't even dare go further than the fence.

So with our tomcat, I have no worries, he would probably even ring the doorbell again at the front door to be let in. With the two females, we are not really sure. One of them would definitely want to explore the big wide world. We have a little daughter, and once she figures out how to open doors, off she goes into the big wide world.

But how do you want to make a garden so secure that no cat can get out? Then you have to build some kind of cage, because cats are not deterred by a 2m high fence. Where there is a will, there is a way. It should all sort itself out, either she learns to deal with the freedom, or stays at home. Better not, she might end up hanging somewhere because she wanted to get out.

...we have been puzzling over the problem for quite some time. Given the way our property/house is situated, there is a mediocre garden area behind the house. The neighbors around there have more or less retreated as well. We have also seen one or two fence elements that can probably be described as cat-proof, but of course we were way over budget. As an alternative, we are considering a terrace/outdoor seating area, which we can make cat-proof with less financial effort. Your note that it could potentially be dangerous is really very good. We hadn’t considered that at all.
