Can a garage be attached to a prefab house?

We built a timber frame three years ago. The concrete slab for the garage was already done back then. Now we finally want to build the garage walls. So now I am wondering if I am allowed to build the garage walls in such a way that I use the outer wall of my house as the inner wall of the garage? Or are there problems with the fire protection regulations? I hope someone can help me.

Hello Christian,

unfortunately, I cannot tell you anything about the fire protection regulations; in your place, I would ask the responsible building authority.

What I can tell you, however, is that many manufacturers of timber frame prefabricated houses specify a minimum distance between the exterior wall of the house and the garage to prevent (moisture) damage to the wall.

In our case, for example, this was 8 cm!

If you do not maintain this minimum distance, you may jeopardize the warranty/guarantee for your house.

=> Ask the manufacturer!!!

You should also not overlook the structural aspects – the roof of the garage must somehow be supported on the side adjoining the house – here, too, you should consult a professional.
