And that is a good thing. Volunteer fire departments may probably not be quite at the professional level of career fire departments and are certainly slower depending on the time of day, but especially in rural areas they also bring the advantage that the firefighters usually know exactly how many people of what age live in most houses and, with a bit of luck, even already know the premises. Since they also know well who is related or friends with whom, additional "emotional support" can be requested in no time. People who reduce a volunteer fire department to drinking parties because they don’t perceive their practical work at all (because city dwellers are used to career fire departments) are naturally not really wanted, as long as this arrogance is obvious. Urban versus rural has always been a fundamental question. I think I know no one who says they could equally imagine both as a place of residence for themselves.
