Listen to your gut. And if it - as I read it - says "no."

I have a case in my circle of acquaintances where the mother-in-law actually only wanted the best (really very nice and helpful) and through the resulting interference the marriage completely fell apart.

Hello!

I am new here, I have been a rather silent reader for the past few weeks as we are still at the very beginning of our building planning. However, I can speak from experience on this topic.

From my own experience, I would clearly say: "No, don’t do it!"

Seven years ago, my husband and I converted the attic in my parents' house. In our case, the house was divided according to WEG. Everyone has their own apartment, cellar, garden, and garage are used communally. We both are registered in the land register.
And no, we definitely wouldn’t do it again.
You are never alone, you always have to coordinate, you don’t make decisions on your own. There weren’t really any problems or conflicts with us. However, it is all too close to us, we notice that more and more.

I don’t want to write too much about this now, but my husband and I have now decided to build a house after all and are currently looking for a plot of land. However, since we have two school-age children and want to avoid changing schools, the whole undertaking is quite difficult.

Our apartment will be taken over by my parents after we move out and rented within the family.

My husband’s father has a very large garden and also offered us to build there. But that is not an option for us. We want something of our own, with some distance from the rest of the family.

If you already have doubts now, listen to your gut feeling!

Best regards

We can pay for the property without a loan.

Once you have earned the equity together, nothing stands in the way of a 50/50 registration.

How foolish you could look after a breakup, I do not see that as dependent on whether the property came from the open market or was a gift from the parents-in-law. It definitely should no longer be "their" property if you build on it - cf. our pianist thread: - but I actually see the bigger problem here in the vicinity of potential meddling parties who thereby (hopefully unconsciously, but that doesn’t make it any better in practice) "buy into" your relationship and the development of their grandchildren.

Without wanting to offend you, I do think that is a bit like comparing apples and oranges. Building next to the parents is one thing, living under the same roof with them is another. Apartment and single-family house
