I see the same chances regarding building a house / buying an apartment. When I’m 50, my children will be just under 20. They probably haven’t bought or built an apartment yet… at least that’s what I assume.

For me, it’s more about preserving the substance. Often, the wealth of a previous generation is squandered and the children lack the basics. Presumably, in 20 years, living space will be even scarcer and building more difficult.

What’s the point of investing a lot of money in new construction after 50… if the children later end up living in a 4-room apartment due to lack of financial means. That was the thought I had here. But many see it differently. When I die, it will be too late for my children… they won’t need the place I might build at 50 anymore.

We are 60 and 62 and are currently planning a new house for next year, age-appropriate, but large and all on one level. The children have left the house, we have no worries, why should we continue saving for them? Now we have to think of ourselves again, the current house on a slope will be sold. That is why we do not squander anything that belongs to the descendants. :)

Hello,
we are doing that too... I am still under 50, but my husband is over. We are building bigger than now, but have planned our area completely on the ground floor and very spaciously. Both children are still at home, and that will probably remain so for a while. In our building area, there are some who already have their children out of the house and are building new again. Why not?

By the way, we have already earned our first house ourselves, without inheritance or support from parents or the like, and it is the same with the second house. I am not building this for my children; if they want a similar standard of living, they have to do something for it.

Where is "merlin" in all these child arguments? Don’t you also think that your children learn by virtue of your upbringing that you have a right to an _own_ life?

We are now 55 and 56, our children 35 + 30; if we have not managed by now to teach them the pitfalls of life and how to cope with them, then the inheritance won’t help them either when we eventually embark on the final journey ;)

Rhenish greetings

This is not about squandering/living frivolously with financial resources, but rather that parents have to find the optimal provision for themselves.

The children are eventually, starting with their education, responsible for themselves. It is certainly nice if the parents have something left over to make the children's start easier, but otherwise it is part of growing up and becoming independent that children are responsible for their own future from a certain age.
