Hello everyone,

We are currently facing the not-so-easy challenge of planning our approximately 7.5 sqm bathroom (slight L-shape) and arranging the components and windows.
The two windows (1x west side with large deciduous trees, 1x north side – both about 6m from the sidewalk, since it’s a corner property) can still be adjusted in size and position, or theoretically one window can be removed. The room dimensions are unchangeable.

Essential fixtures:
- Bathtub
- Separate shower
- Washbasin/vanity
- Toilet
- Heated towel rail

If possible:
- Space for washing machine
- Create a sense of spaciousness in this small bathroom
- No wall or shower wall/glass shower wall right next to the washbasin, as this feels cramped (or maybe not?)
- Arrange windows so that a good compromise between brightness, privacy, appearance, and functionality is achieved
- Small storage options for towels/cleaning supplies

We lack an experiential value regarding the position of the washbasin:
- How problematic is it to have the bathroom door behind your back when standing in front of the washbasin? Online you find relatively few variants where the washbasin is positioned as a focal point when entering the bathroom. Usually, it is placed on the wall to the left or right of the door.

Currently, we have two variants (one without and one with washing machine), but both have disadvantages, of course.

Variant 1:
- Problematic access to the shower
- Problematic washing at the washbasin with your back to the door

Variant 2:
- Problem of missing washing machine (no possibility in the basement, through the open kitchen area to the living room only a compromise due to loud spinning)
- Problem with window arrangement

Do you maybe have some ideas on how to improve the arrangement or other layout variants which have proven themselves in practice as a good compromise between aesthetics and functionality?

We would be very grateful for your help and ideas!

Excuse me! But you are building new, probably rather small, which is not a problem. Apparently, it is a city villa with two full floors. Then a basement… and you have not thought about a washing machine spot at all? It is a purely utility basement that can't even accommodate a laundry room?! I would be interested in the entire house design including the floor plan and questionnaire, see . Something doesn't seem right to me in the planning. Has the building application already been submitted?

Hello ypg, no, it is a renovation of a small house from the 1930s with a crawl attic and a small basement room with 1.70m height, which cannot be lowered without an uneconomical, extremely costly effort (Pilgerschrittverfahren), dried out, insulated and made usable as a utility room. The floor plan of the house can no longer be changed and is fixed.

Ok, then it’s not due to planning, but due to the circumstance. … Let’s see… :)

I would initially consider the windows secondary. Two windows for a 7sqm+ room will be sufficient. Since it is not a living room, it does not need to be brightly lit like the kitchen, where one also works. So: first furnish, then the windows. Then the door could probably also be made to open outward?! Towels can be stored well by placing a board from wall to wall above the door and displaying the towels there, rolled or stacked. A basket can also store other things that one does not think of now. For how many people is the bathroom intended? How many people use it at the same time?

How about like this? Bathtub in the niche, then toilet and washbasin on the left and shower and towel radiator on the right?
