There are PVC floors that have a backing made of asbestos fibers. It looks like gray cardboard. But it only actually becomes problematic when you tear up the floor.

So it's definitely not asbestos?

No! Again: it may be, but also may not be. No definitive statement is possible based on photos or explanation. Wait for the laboratory result.

This is pretty definitely not linoleum,
Just wait for the analysis.

Thank you for the answers. I'm getting a bit nervous. As mentioned, we moved in in 2014... could this, if it is asbestos, mean that every time we went into the basement over the past 7 years, we have inhaled asbestos? That would increase our risk of getting cancer at some point, right? It wouldn't just be a one-time, short exposure, but we go down there often and also dry the laundry in the basement in winter...

Just breathe calmly through your nose. Even if since 1972 certainly 33 house residents have died of cancer, it's not that bad ;-)

Asbestos is harmless as long as it does not crumble or is processed/used in a way that asbestos fibers are released, which you then have to inhale. Only the fibers are the problem (this is due to the extremely unfavorable fiber geometry - asbestos itself is not toxic or dangerous. That's why it often remains simply built-in, because then it's harmless.
What happens in your basement besides the potential asbestos under the topsoil? Nothing. You just walk over it. Or do you produce fibers every time you go there? Are you processing the floor?

You are merely irrationally hysterical. Nothing more. Sorry.
