One could say that homeowners are the top 40%, and then only those who currently have the money for a new car or a young used one are supported. So basically, those who are already well off are supported. Many here probably belong to that group. The only question is whether that makes sense as a society.
It is a commonly believed misunderstanding that owning a home means you are in the top 40%. Not a few homeowners are retirees living in buildings that are at best from the late 1990s. So, more or less dilapidated. The question is more what happens if the 35-year-old gas boiler breaks down, rather than the purchase of an ID.4 starting at 45,000 EUR.
And those who have built in the last 2, 3 years, with all the price explosions... I do not believe that for many of them the question of an electric new car is at the top of their list right now.
It remains as it is. This was or is a subsidy for people who do not need it. Instead, they should have used the 300 million EUR for a lottery and energetically renovated 3,000 houses for 100,000 EUR each. That would do more for CO2 emissions than an electric car.
