Such a space-saving staircase does not bother. You learn to navigate around it quite quickly. I initially had the staircase in the children's room. Then, when the children got older, I moved it to the former gallery. It doesn't really get in the way. Just leave the existing staircase downstairs. If visitors come who might take offense, simply fold it up.
