No, that is your subjective opinion, nothing else.

The definition of "modest" is:

simple, plain, not meeting elevated demands

Neither a new building nor a new 5 Series BMW correspond to this definition, and certainly not a villa for >1 million.

What I find is often forgotten in this discussion (and also elsewhere in the forum) are the respective priorities. The saying "you only build once" is true for most people. How much one invests in special wishes and the corresponding extra costs, and how sensible that is, is very personal. For some people, their own house is the oasis, the hobby project, and the great happiness factor in life. For others, it is just the place to sleep, eat, and spend unplanned free time, but overall it does not have the same importance in their personal perception of happiness. Depending on where one finds oneself on this scale, it also makes different amounts of sense in everyday life to do without other comforts in order to be able to make a higher mortgage payment. For some people, it is worth it, and they are happy with it because comfortable and nice living is important to them. For others, perhaps package holidays, expensive hobbies, or dining out in style are more important, and the house is just a utility.

In fashion, what is perceived as "standard" rises faster than the "recognized rules of technology." As a matter of fact, the number of young people who are simply too lazy to lift their feet is increasing much more strongly than the number of old people who can cite orthopedic excuses.

Well, the saying still comes from the time of golden wedding anniversaries. Today, many only reach that far if they add up all their marriages.

The good old golden wedding couples. Our generation of divorce is the product of years of observing these picture-perfect marriages.
