take a third one as well: the self-image. The OP describes herself as modest. And she is not the only one who thinks of herself as modest. Building a house is not very modest in itself. Outfitting it above average isn’t either. It’s not a problem, but it leads into the cost trap to convince oneself that one wants to live/dwell modestly and to write off all extra wishes as "these are my wishes, they are modest wishes." There is nothing wrong with special wishes. It helps immensely to clearly and honestly realize what fits the "modest" self-image and is "necessary" and what does not. I myself fell into the trap and found/have found that I live modestly. But actually, that’s not true at all. I have my own house, properly and nicely furnished. That is already much more than what we here (in the forum and in the entire country) would call modest. Reality check hurts, but helps.

You are absolutely right about that! But when I look over the fence, I really live modestly. My neighbor has the much bigger place and also the more expensive cars... and he is only 25 years old... strange!

Being modest does not mean consuming less than the neighbor.

I agree with you 100%. The only one I can think of here who was really modest was . By the way, did I miss something?
