The workbench you mentioned, by the way, comes from Simplaflex; Stier just puts its label on it.

My husband also placed an old kitchen base cabinet on the left and right and then simply bought a countertop at the hardware store and fastened it on.

That all sounds so cobbled together. I actually wanted something "decent". So Taurus is not the Mercedes? Well, a solid VW would probably be enough, I think. But just for your information. What would be the Mercedes?

Well, at some point that's probably a matter of belief and always depends on the intended use. But for the all-round craftsman, names like Rau and Lista come to mind, which are already playing at a very high level. But I have been out of the topic for several years now, I built mine myself back then because I needed something very stable.

So I also have a workbench from the previous owner in the garage. I think a workbench doesn't need to have too much. One level, a sturdy top, storage space, a vise, and options to fasten something. At least for a hobby craftsman, that is probably enough. Important are power outlets all around. I also have an air outlet from the compressor. Then here and there some shelves. However, I also have lots and lots of tools and small stuff.

That sounds to me like it's primarily about presentation, and then the advice can only be: Buy yourself something nice!

Honestly, whether such a workbench is made of wood, 0.6mm steel sheet, 1mm, or something in between. The construction can withstand 500kg or 2.5 tons and the drawers can carry 30, 50, 80, or 100kg – for your use case (storing some standard tools properly, occasionally having a surface to repair electronics, and "maybe someday a small shelf will be built there") they are all oversized.
