Hello dear ones,

we received our offer for our steel stringer staircase today, which means that we do not want (standard) beech wood steps with finger-jointed lamination.

My questions:

1. Is there a quality difference between finger-jointed lamination and edge-glued lamination (our favorite)?

Standard would be a matte DD varnish as a coating. We now also have an offer for oiling instead of varnish.

2. Are there big disadvantages with oiled stair steps?

I imagine that our staircase, which will be placed in the living area, would have a more natural feel when oiled (i.e., not varnished). Also, it would not be as slippery. Of course, it would need to be re-oiled from time to time, but I would accept that. It would be open-pored then; with our former table, there were red wine stains... but I guess you can disregard that on a staircase?!
The color of the steps would be dark dark brown.

Funny enough, the offer is off by just under 92 cents compared to my naive calculation "surcharge for staircase builder."
Is that a sign??

Hello =)

There is no difference in quality between finger-jointed and dowel-jointed; only the appearance and price differ, the finger-jointing is cheaper because shorter pieces of wood can be used.

We decided on an oiled staircase (oak, white oiled):

- looks cozier
- scratches are less noticeable and easier to repair
- well oiled, the wood is also not so sensitive; if you wipe away mishaps immediately, nothing will happen, our staircase is between the ground floor and the upper floor, and since the upper floor only has bedrooms, we don’t go up there with street shoes or regularly with wine glasses anyway

Best regards,

Sebastian

Thank you very much, Sebastian,

so it's all just a matter of appearance and money?!

I agree with my predecessor. I have never been able to detect a quality difference between [Stab-und Riegelverleimung].

I also cannot detect any difference in quality between finger jointing and strip gluing; certainly, strip gluing looks nicer if you prefer the parquet look. We had a great staircase custom-made at the carpentry near us.
