Dear forum community,

first of all, I wish you a happy new year!

In the course of the furnishing planning, I have the option to receive an antique family heirloom in the form of a cabinet from the early 19th century, to which I am also attached.
Unfortunately, this cabinet has been standing for several years in a house from the late 19th century, in whose wooden floorboards the woodworm has since appeared. (A renovation of the same is not planned due to the effort involved.)

Now I want to reject the gift because I fear a transfer of the woodworm #durch den Schrank# to our house.
A renovation of the cabinet from possible larvae by heating seems to me the only alternative.

By the way, can woodworm be transferred through shoe soles or clothing if you have visited an infested house?

Are my fears exaggerated?

Thanks for your input!

Woodlouse or woodworm?
And well, theoretically you can bring both types in with one piece of furniture, but the woodworm aka furniture beetle only infests wood that is stored rather damp, cool and dark. Normally heated living rooms lead to wood moisture levels in which the larvae cannot survive. However, you cannot carry the pests in on shoes etc. The beetle only flies for a short time in early summer and looks for suitable wood in a suitable location to lay its eggs. Usually only within a small radius.
A heat treatment of the piece of furniture should solve the problem.

Hello Myrna Loy,

thank you, that already helps me. By the way, it is indeed the tick. The house was always inhabited and heated, so an infestation of the floorboards with woodboring beetles does not fit anyway.

However, the woodworm only infests softwood and there almost exclusively the sapwood. But that is not common furniture wood. At best as core wood, but even that hardly ever occurs. They prefer installed parts.
