Wind on the terrace makes it uncomfortable with the umbrella

If the wind blows steadily, there should be no heat under an awning. With side panels, of course, it looks different. However, 4-6m/s corresponds to medium 3 to lower 4 on the Beaufort scale (for me, ideal sailing wind), and with an awning you quickly reach the limits, especially if you want to extend it more than 2m. Then you need something with feet.

Against the wind, a hedge helps, also bushes on the terrace. A beautiful tree with a nice crown in the right position provides shade.

I used to think that way too. With climate change, in addition to the new kind of summer drought, we also have a sort of foehn wind now. Hot wind that blows quite strong and often. In my opinion, that is the biggest killer of native plant varieties. Nothing grows or only at a snail's pace. Without our irrigation, it would look really bleak. So before you get old, I would also recommend shading with a louvered roof or something similar. You can still plant - but it takes time...

We have an ancient, white, double-flowered climbing rose on an east-south side that bloomed beautifully every year. This year, the blossoms dried up in the bud. No matter how much we watered, the wind and sun withered everything.
