Will this work or are we just dreaming about buying a house?

The figures, income/credit, do not look bad. I think that is feasible. Good luck! :)

So the tip about changing the tax class is good, but also the note that there can be a tax back payment! It is about the progression clause, meaning the parental allowance is then taken into account and can lead to a higher tax burden. The back payment therefore only threatens in the year in which the parental allowance is received. You should at least keep that in mind or possibly calculate it in advance.

But nevertheless, maximizing the parental allowance is sensible, you should just keep in mind that the parental allowance is subject to the progression clause and thus there can be a back payment (also of a not insignificant amount). Especially if the tax classes are then changed again!

People, people. Birth in 2019, then parental allowance. Only then do you switch back. The parental allowance is only used to determine the progression and is not directly taxed. All good! The switch has more impact

You mean switching back only after the parental allowance has expired? I'm not saying that the switch isn’t sensible. One should just keep in mind that it might still be the case, due to the [progression clause], that a back payment becomes necessary. Sure, as long as he stays in the worse tax class, that probably won’t happen, BUT then you accept a lower income. Ok, you might then possibly get a tax refund for that, but in the end, it will probably balance out.

However, if you switch back after the birth and while still receiving parental allowance, a back payment is not unlikely!

It doesn't matter at all when you switch back. You should do a tax return anyway, if you receive [Elterngeld], you even have to. By the way, the change of tax classes must take place 6 full months before the maternity leave. In addition, the new tax class only applies from the month after the application. In all likelihood, you are already too late anyway.

I quote"
These income replacement benefits do not increase the »taxable income«, but affect the tax rate applied to the remaining income. Since the tax rate with received parental allowance is higher than without, most new parents face higher taxes and thus a tax payment to the tax office."

The tax payment usually amounts
in most cases to the amount of the parental allowance for 1 month.
