But in the end, it doesn't matter whether the area is paved or graveled. Water seeps away on both, nothing grows on either. If anything, you have to be consistent and use grass grids. Unfortunately, almost no one does that anymore.

With gravel it seeps away, with paving a drainage may need to be planned. It is indeed a difference whether heavy rain hits a paved surface or gravel. With paving, the water has to find a way. That is why permeable paving is still a sealing. Grass grids are now also considered paving, but I really like them. They are now also available in a straight pattern, which some prefer over the diagonal honeycomb pattern.

We have simple paving, and it seeps away there too. In heavy rain it may stand for a while, but after a few hours it has seeped away. Between and under the individual stones there is also gravel or chippings, underneath that gravel. There may be exceptions if material is used as an intermediate space through which no water can pass. If your base is naturally soil that does not allow water to penetrate (e.g., clay soil), you need drainage. But that is the case with gravel as well.

Exactly, after a few hours on gravel it is a few seconds.

So I still have gravel around the house and during the last heavy rain, I think it was in August, 60, 70 liters, the water stood for several hours.

But that was not the question, it was about the general infiltration. Of course it happens faster there. We also have gravel on the driveway to the property. It infiltrates faster there, but not in seconds during heavy rain. And we already have sandy soil underneath here.
