What size is suitable for a kitchen island or passage widths?

Hello everyone,

we have already ordered a kitchen, but we can still relatively freely choose the dimensions. The reason was that we wanted to decide on the kitchen island only once the shell construction is completed. The screed is coming next week, and we are now at the point where we are thinking about the size of the kitchen island. Currently, the plan shows the almost maximum possible size. The saleswoman said the room "can accommodate" these dimensions. We are not sure and actually wanted to limit the width to a maximum of 2.7m. We would also reduce the depth to a maximum of 1.1m. What do you think about this? Smaller or leave it as it is? Should the distance between the kitchen unit and the island also be increased to 1.2m?

Whether we position living or dining on the right or left side of the plan, we will only decide after moving in. So we would first take our simple furniture and test it for a while. On the left, you can step out onto the small terrace at floor level.

Best regards

I find them clearly too deep. They look so massive and like a disturbing factor. We have the classic one. 95cm (60cm deep cabinets at the front, 35cm at the back), and I have problems cleaning/wiping from only one side. I would probably keep the length, reduce the depth by 10cm or 15cm, and also place it a bit closer to the kitchen unit. One meter is actually ideal, unless you are very corpulent or have planned wide doors. The space in front of the stairs should be somewhat more generous.

Wait until the screed is laid and then draw it on the floor with chalk or, even better, build it with moving boxes as shown in the plan. Then you will see if it is too massive for you or not.

Maybe it was actually enough to take away some of the depth.... But this is how I'll do it, I still have some floor insulation left. I'll use that to reconstruct the block.

What does the kitchen unit at the bottom of the plan look like? Are those tall cabinets?

If the distance of this kitchen unit to the island is chosen so that the dishwasher door can be open at the same time and it is positioned directly opposite the preferred dish cabinet/drawer, this greatly speeds up the emptying process. This works with pull-out drawers opposite the built-under dishwasher, for example, starting from an aisle width of 1.15m.

With an island depth of about 117cm, standard depth base cabinets still fit on both sides – of course, this provides significantly more storage space compared to 35cm base cabinets. Another consideration: If the kitchen unit consists of tall cabinets, then a deep island also creates very usable workspace opposite the sink/cooktop – if all of that is going to be on the island. Maybe later there will also be a fully automatic coffee machine / portafilter espresso machine there, which takes up more workspace. I enjoy the space at my island 3.70m x 1.17m + aisle width 1.25m every day.

Addition: and yes, an island like the one in the plan is of course no longer inconspicuous. It will definitely dominate the spatial impression, especially with regard to the surrounding space conditions for EATING and LIVING. I would definitely also position the dining table provisionally on site, including chairs, which in real life are never completely pushed under the table. I have some concerns that it could unfortunately become quite tight here. However, I find the basic room layout with the island in the middle as a space zoning very good.
