From my experience, something should be used there to prevent soil from seeping through the gaps. However, I don't know whether a dimpled membrane or some kind of fleece is better.

The thread can be closed. I simply used a dimpled membrane and positioned the dimples facing inward. 10cm below the top edge of the palisade. Pine bark will be placed on top of that.

At our place, the lower "gap area" was sealed a bit with PU foam. Otherwise, the soil lies directly against the "wall". No problems with it so far in 10 years!
