Hello

we have a new building planned with a garden about 10x20m (10m wide)

the terrace should be 3x5m but later expanded to 5x10m (10m wide)

we want to cover our terrace in summer later for sun protection (e.g. when it is too hot or when sitting at the table eating)

Which terrace roofing would you recommend?

a fixed/immovable terrace roofing, e.g. an awning with frosted glass

or a movable terrace roofing like an electric awning (then we have to plan the power connection)

Depends on the location of the terrace. If the roof makes the house dark in winter, then flexible. If the roof has no impact on the light in the house, then fixed.

Our terrace is about 6 cm wide and about 9 m long; it nestles into the L of the open-plan living area.

On the one hand, we have a flat roof with a side roof overhang of 60 cm (SE) as well as a concrete terrace roof about 3 m deep (SW). Attached to that is an electrically operated awning of about 5x5 m. (Markilux) - we have had the awning for 10 years and it works wonderfully.

No, our living room is not dark; in winter the sun reaches all the way to the back of the room; in summer the terrace is in cool shade. On the terrace ceiling we also have a fan for the really hot summer days.

Thank you

The terrace is southwest-facing, so lots of sun

Living room, terrace, and garden are basically all in a line
to the right we still have 4m of space and a very small L because of the garage

It could be that less light comes into the living room, that is also a problem.
We only have the lift-and-slide door and kitchen window (open kitchen) as windows

probably the electric awning is the better choice, right?

How sensitive are these awnings to wind? I’ve heard that you have to close them already in light to moderate wind

With a southwest orientation, you can easily cover 2-3 meters with a fixed roof and then use the guided awning for the rest – it withstands more wind than the one with flexible arms. The awnings also have a wind sensor; ours is usually only extended to 'half-mast', also as a precaution against gusts. In midsummer, it is usually calm – then we extend it fully.

Under a fixed roof, it is significantly cooler in summer than just under the awning, and you also have all-weather protection for the garden furniture.

Can you upload a sketch of the house with orientation? Then it can be better assessed.

I would also have liked a fixed roof on our terrace, but the idea of always seeing a beam structure instead of the sky stopped me from that. Awnings often do not cast the shade where you need it. For us, the large sunshade umbrella was the better alternative, even if you now have to carry cushions etc. inside when it rains.
