Yes and no. If you want to preserve the color of the wood, you need to oil it regularly. If it is allowed/desired to turn gray, then you don’t need much maintenance.
In the end, it also depends on taste and, if applicable, an ecological attitude (keyword tropical wood).
You can get a nice brown color with durable (local) wood, for example with thermal wood (thermo ash, etc.). It is also extremely durable. Tropical woods are also nice, ranging from brown to reddish to striped varieties (classic Bangkirai, but also IPE, Cumaru, Garapa, etc.). Bamboo works too.
Local but less durable woods include Robinia, larch, pine (I don’t like any of those).
On our construction site, they asked whether the exterior plaster would later be adjacent to a wooden or stone terrace, as it apparently concerns sealing. We decided on a stone terrace, which will be completed along with the handover of the house.
