Building Information Modelling....when building a single-family house?! Aren't most architects using AutoCAD or Nemetschek – primarily on MacOS? At least for us, DWG (AutoCAD) is the exchange format that architecture firms, structural engineers, building services engineers, and lighting planners use to share information... Not that I would unreservedly recommend Cadvilla, but what do you think Cadvilla is missing for a single-family house? And how do you come up with MeinHausplaner?!

Probably yes.

That's why Revit on WIN might be a bit buggy. I don't have a Mac, always these aesthetes...

I once downloaded it. Nice little toy. But with an existing floor plan, a bit too fiddly.

And I work full-time with MechCAD. You get trained on the program and see what else is possible. That's even worse than switching from MS Office to OpenOffice.

What is BIM supposed to be good for? For a single-family house? Just to say it was done? Most single-family houses don’t even have an MEP planner...

Don’t get me wrong, I think BIM is great, I use it professionally and am clearly of the opinion that it represents the future of construction planning.
But you can also use a sledgehammer to crack a nut...

No, I don't misunderstand that. Sure, the future belongs to it. But when you see what MechCAD can do, BIM software is still years away from that. And as I said, I am trained on a different kind of CAD. I already get annoyed when I have to press ESC to end a function or use the keyboard to rotate in 3D. It can be done better too. Of course, it could also be that with an annual price of €3,500 for REVIT and about €18,000 for the single-user license of MechCAD, there is still a "small" difference.

Thank you very much for your suggestions!

I have now watched a few tutorials from cadvilla and also taken a look at Revit.
Revit is however ruled out because of the price: €2,921.45 per year.

CADVilla is significantly more affordable, depending on the edition between €30 - €220 and the possibility to upgrade to a higher edition for an additional cost.

I first had to do a quick search to understand what BIM means, but I don't think I need it, let alone fully understand what BIM is all about.

As I said, I want to use the software to digitally capture an existing building and then adjust the floor plans. I find the 3D view very interesting to get an impression of the rooms. It would also be good if I can draw sockets, ceiling and wall penetrations, stairs, and windows. I also want to draw my outdoor area as a top view.

It would be great if I could then hand over my amateur plans in digital form to a professional. They can then optimize the room layout, calculate the static, or completely redo everything because the professional has much better ideas.

Does this answer to my question whether architects mainly use AutoCAD or Nemetschek make any sense?! [emoji848][emoji4]

...or professionals, depending on the perspective. You can also easily run Windows in a VM [emoji6]

No, the question was why you mentioned Cadvilla and MeinHausplaner in the same breath. Sounds like you think they are the same software. But whatever, maybe we talked past each other.

But recommending software, no matter how good it is, in the four-digit price range for that requirement profile? Seriously? [emoji6]

That would be like recommending a Hilti when the housewife only wants to drill a single hole in the wall... completely missing the need, right? [emoji4]
