Hello,
we are currently considering what is actually the best roofing for our new build. Gable roof without a dormer and also no skylights.

Smooth clay roof tile
or
flat roof tile or Frankfurt pan (by that I mean roof tiles with a curvature)

What are the differences or advantages and disadvantages?
Are there differences in weather protection?
Does a smooth tile protect better against animals because they cannot crawl under it as easily?
Can summer heat be better dissipated with curved roof tiles?
90% of the south side will be covered with photovoltaic modules, does the choice of roof tiles make a difference in terms of photovoltaics?

Thanks for the help.

Lately, a part of the forum here swears by metal roofing. It also comes in tile look, but under the photovoltaic panels that sooner or later will be on every new build, it basically doesn’t matter how the roof looks under the modules. They are also very durable and cheap. By the way, I have concrete roof tiles [Harzerpfanne]. So far, I haven’t noticed anything bad.

Appearance and price - appearance is limited anyway when it comes to [Photovoltaik].

Otherwise, both variants do exactly the same job.

With the smooth tiles, ensure that hooks for the photovoltaic modules can be installed there. If I remember correctly, this is not (easily) the case with all of them.

Whether roof tiles or roof shingles makes no difference for the described situation. Both make no difference in terms of weather protection. The interlocks are designed so that no water flows back (however, this can happen during heavy rain, which is what the underlay is for), thus no animals can pass through the tiles. When animals penetrate the roof structure, it usually happens in the eaves area. This must be properly sealed and ventilated.
Heat protection is provided by the insulation; this also has nothing to do with the shape of the roofing with tiles or shingles.
From an expert perspective, I recommend an affordable concrete roof tile (Harzer/Frankfurter) since one side will be installed with [Photovoltaik].
In summary, it is purely an aesthetic decision.

I cannot support the suggestion to choose a zinc or aluminum covering here as it is significantly more complex, and therefore also more expensive, to install a [Photovoltaik] system here.

If you have further questions, feel free to contact me.

Our solar installer cut the necessary tiles with a grinder. It worked without any problems on all of them. And we also have "glazed" smooth stones.
