Had the same situation a few years ago. Wanted to and actually did everything myself. For a KNX system, you only need the power supply to start with, and somehow access for programming (via USB or LAN). Everything else is optional. My experience is that you can also save quite a bit of wiring. In the end, I only needed EIB cables at the light switches, motion detectors, and switch cabinets. Expensive are, for example, the roller shutter actuators and the light switches. For the light switches, I ended up with 200€ touch screen models, which is quite cheap in the KNX sector. For light control, I rely entirely on DALI, a great system.
