I was once an exchange student in the USA myself and there - by my own choice - I spent the nights in the basement in the nice hobby room which became my bedroom. But I was also there for a longer time and could choose myself (at 16).

But the girl is coming for a 4-week visit to a friend. She wants to spend time with her too, right? She surely isn't coming because Germany is so beautiful.

For me, there would be no question. If my daughter doesn't want to host the visitor in her room, she can't have any visitors...!

A basement is not just any basement.

As long as I wouldn't have to spend the night in the coal cellar, I wouldn't mind a guest room in the basement, especially in this heat. I always wished for a bed in the basement ...

The American girlfriend is not supposed to go into the basement. We parents would move into the basement and she would get our bedroom upstairs, so that the children also all live on one level.
By the way, the basement room is furnished with carpet, sofa, 100 kg foosball table, dart game, weight bench, etc., which would be okay for us. The basement has sash windows (or whatever they are called), so the room where we sleep has one, and on the other side (washing machine, dryer) there is also one. Some light comes in, but not directly. Ventilation is done by tilting the windows. They open quite far. Outside the window there is a net against animals (we once had a frog in the basement without a net...). With ventilation, the humidity dropped to 73-75% yesterday.

How can you find out if the basement is suitable for sleeping? We also don’t want to have a lung disease or something after 30 days.

PS: By the way, the game basement is on the side where we have a problem with the outdoor water tap: Could there be a connection with the humidity? There is no mold on the walls.

High humidity is good for the respiratory tract, definitely much better than dry air. Mold should not necessarily be present, but if none is visible, it should not be an issue.

I have now spent a week in my parents' basement because my sister was also visiting and we had to divide ourselves accordingly (each of us also had the child with us).

In the guest room in the basement, the humidity was already very high and our clothes were accordingly clammy after two days.

However, after that I placed a dehumidifier in the basement room and "dehumidified" to about 40% during the day. After the night we were back to 75%.
